![]() Real metallurgy is involved in assuring that the finished part is actually the alloy you say it is.ģ00lb anvils, with a decent alloy, finished, are not gonna get much cheaper than $1500 in today's business climate, unless you buy a few hundred from Taiwan or China or eastern europe, at least in my opinion- but hey, I been wrong before. Less mash volume is hardly possible, as the hot liquor won’t even make it to the top of the grain - but that 1-gal recommendation for a sparge is hardly even a. A 12-lb, 5-gallon, sparge batch at 120V was saying 6 gallons mash and 1 gallon sparge. There are a lot fewer foundries in the USA than there used to be, and the Indians have driven all the cheap ones out of business- there is no way to survive as a foundry here nowadays unless you charge a lot.Īnd casting steel was never as easy as aluminum or bronze, it aint a backyard operation. Anvil has recommended mash volumes based on the grain weight, sparge or no-sparge, and 120/240V. I cant see getting a decent steel for less these days, as even cast iron is oftenrunning 3 or 4 bucks.Īnd that is before heat treating and grinding. Jymm Hoffman, who may be the guy in Pennsylvania you are referring to, was getting his colonial style anvils cast for around $5 or $6 a pound. Rathole Forge, in the USA, is making small runs of tool steel anvils here-īeyond just the casting, there is heat treating and surface grinding to consider. The european ones, I believe, come from a big communist era mega foundry called Branko or Bronko or similar in the Czech republic- but I doubt they would do less than a few hundred. You can always brew smaller batches on a 10.5, but you cant brew larger batches on a 6.5. It seems to be very affordable and allow me to use my extra funds for other things such as kegging and/or bottling, ingredients, fermentation, etc. As far as I know, Laurel only casts iron, not steel- After doing more research I believe I have settled on the Anvil Foundry for a couple reasons. ![]()
